What is an XVR?

You’ve heard of  a DVR and an NVR, but what is an XVR?

A DVR (Digital Video Recorder) is a device used to record and process HD Analog or SD Analog video signals . An NVR (Network Video Recorder) is a device used for IP (Internet Protocol) type Cameras. The XVR is a device that is able to record and display both HD and IP Cameras for maximum scalability. While an NVR could still be the choice for most applications using all Internet Protocol Cameras, XVRs have taken HD recording into a new level. In addition, XVR Recorders can support all common HD Video Formats including TVI, AHD, CVI and CVBS. When you have a situation that requires wide compatibility XVR would be your best choice.

Supports TVI, AHD, CVI and CVBS Formats as well as IP Cameras.

Why should I get an XVR?

Upgrading Or New Installations

If  have a legacy Analog or HD Analog Cameras, an XVR will provide more options without having to replace existing equipment. Lets say that you have a 8 Channel DVR with (5) HD 1080P 2MP Cameras. For our example, lets assume that you want an higher resolution cameras or even want to add IP Cameras. The need for higher resolution is obviously a common one. However, you may also have a unique or specific security need that only an IP Camera will provide. Of course, you could  scrap your existing system, an go with a new NVR and NEW IP cameras, but that might be more expensive . As an alternative, you could choose an XVR. This would allow you to keep the (5) existing cameras as well as adding all types  cameras of any format including new IP cameras.

When should you choose an XVR?

When we have a situation that clients have an older system with some high quality cameras or quality cable installation that could last for many years to come, we will always try to keep the existing high quality cameras and will not replace them with a new long distance wiring installation and new IP cameras that would affect the cost tremendously. We always choose the type of recorder and cameras after analyzing your security needs, your existing equipment and the quality of the existing installation to determining the right solution for your company/organization.
